🎉 Giving PLA a second life: this is how WereldjeMakers recycles 3D printing waste

At WereldjeMakers we believe that sustainable production should be the norm, especially when it comes to toys. Our cheerful and child-friendly 3D printed figures are made with PLA, an environmentally friendly material. But did you know that PLA does not simply belong in the trash?

In this blog you can read how we at WereldjeMakers recycle our PLA waste via RecyclingFabrik and how you can contribute to this.

🌽 What is PLA anyway?

PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable plastic made from natural raw materials such as corn starch. It is therefore a popular choice in 3D printing for those who want to produce consciously. However, composting PLA is usually not possible in your own garden. Industrial installations are required for this. And in the normal waste stream, PLA unfortunately often ends up in the incinerator.

♻️ Why is PLA recycling important?

Many waste processors do not accept PLA as a recyclable plastic. As a result, even environmentally friendly waste still ends up in the landfill. Fortunately, there are initiatives such as RecyclingFabrik that specifically recycle PLA (and PETG) into new filament – exactly what we need to make new play figures again.

🛠 How does recycling work via RecyclingFabrik?

  1. Collect – You save PLA and PETG waste (color doesn’t matter, but the material does).

  2. Shipping – You can easily request a shipping label via this page . From the Netherlands, a minimum of 15 kg applies.

  3. Processing – The material is sorted, washed, shredded and processed into new 3D filament.

This way we contribute together to a circular economy!

🌍 What does WereldjeMakers do?

At WereldjeMakers we send all our PLA waste – from failed prints to supports – to RecyclingFabrik. This way we ensure that:

  • ♻️ Our production process produces as little waste as possible

  • 🌱 We save new raw materials

  • 🔁 We contribute to a closed, circular system

Our packaging has also been carefully chosen and our toy collection consists of figures that last a long time and are safe for children.
